"Mid-October through mid-May we are open weekends." That line sits on the Sherwood Inn dining page, just under the daily hours for Vintages, its fine dining room. It is easy to miss, and from this week on it sets how evenings out work on the Lake Joseph side. The inn sits on the edge of Lake Joseph outside Port Carling and stays open all year. Its dining room is also open to the public. The page says this is so "local cottagers and area residents may enjoy world-class dining in cottage country."
Thanksgiving Monday feels like the end of the season. On Lake Joe, though, the season ends in stages, and the stage that starts now is a weekend schedule. If you stay on past the long weekend, the next seven months run on certain Fridays and Saturdays, plus a few weekends that are already booked into Sherwood's calendar.
The summer patio closed five weeks ago
The first table to go was down the road. Lake Joseph Club's Water's Edge Wine Bar & Grill served from noon to 9 p.m. every day from June 24 through September 6. The club now lists it as closed for the 2026 season. The Lake Joseph Club golf course is about five minutes from Sherwood. With the patio closed, dinner on that stretch of shore moves indoors to Sherwood.
In season, Vintages runs on a long daily schedule:
- Breakfast buffet, 8 to 11 a.m.
- Lounge menu, noon to 10 p.m.
- Vintages dinner menu, 5 to 9 p.m.
From mid-October those hours shrink to weekends, with Thursday dinner on most weeks. Sherwood describes its winter schedule a little differently from page to page. Its own winter specials page puts it most precisely:
"We are open Friday to Sunday, and our restaurant is open most Thursdays for dinner, and lunch on Fridays through to breakfast on Sundays."
The Discover Muskoka listing says the inn is open Thursday to Sunday for the winter. The difference is that Thursday dinner is likely but not guaranteed. The dining page also warns that some weekends close for weddings, and it recommends booking ahead or calling (705) 765-3131. In practice, a weekend dinner on Lake Joe this fall starts with a phone call.
The weekends already on the calendar
With fewer service days, Sherwood has scheduled its fall and early winter around a few set dates. Here they are in order, along with one village event in Port Carling that falls in the same stretch.
- Friday, October 23, 2026: the Friday rate begins. Sherwood's 30% off Friday nights offer runs from October 23, 2026, to May 1, 2027. The discount applies when Saturday night is booked at the regular rate.
- November 13 to 15, 2026: the Culinary Weekend. This is the biggest event of the fall, priced from $529 per night per couple.
- Saturday, November 28, 2026: the Port Carling Christmas Parade. The annual parade comes through the village two weeks after the Culinary Weekend.
- Saturday, December 5, 2026: the Holiday Murder Mystery Dinner & Show. The package includes a room, a three-course dinner, the interactive mystery and live entertainment at 9 p.m., from $248 per night per couple.
The Friday offer is the one that matters most to a cottager. It makes a two-night stay cheaper for the season's big weekends. It also makes it cheaper to book rooms on the lake for guests when your own cottage is partly closed up, or full.
Inside the Culinary Weekend
The November weekend shows how Sherwood fills a quiet month on the lake. Discover Muskoka's listing sets out the program:
- Friday night: a Marché-style dinner with a food truck theme. It has live street food stations, cocktail demos, and craft beer and spirit tastings.
- Saturday afternoon: a Mediterranean tapas demo at the Sherwood Smokehouse, followed by an interactive wine tasting about how water affects wine.
- Saturday evening: a six-course Mediterranean wine-pairing dinner, billed as the highlight of the weekend.
- Saturday and Sunday mornings: gourmet breakfasts.
The listing sells it as an overnight package priced per couple per night. A cottager who wants only the Saturday dinner should ask the inn whether single seats are available. The listing doesn't say.
The wine tasting is backed by a real cellar. Sherwood says Vintages holds more than 2,000 bottles and over 200 selections, with a focus on Australia, California, Italy and Bordeaux. The inn has won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its wine list in many years. A pairing dinner drawn from a list that size has plenty to choose from, even in mid-November.
The room for when the family comes up
The same cellar has a feature that suits the holidays. Next to the wine cellar is the Cellar Dining Room, a private room for up to 14 people. Bookings are required and private dining charges apply. Sherwood's kitchen and service team can design a multi-course menu with wine pairings for the group.
That timing matters on the weekend schedule. Vintages also prepares special menus for holidays, including Christmas and New Year's. Those dates arrive after the October switch, when the room serves fewer nights and some weekends go to weddings. A 14-seat room on a short holiday calendar is the kind of booking to make in October.
Weekends at Sherwood also go beyond dinner. Its listing points to towering century-old pines to walk through, a fireplace with hot chocolate, and winter amenities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A late-fall Saturday there can run from a morning walk under the pines to dinner in Vintages.
Early in the week, the table moves into Port Carling
The weekend schedule leaves a gap early in the week, and the nearest dated option is in the village. Portside Fusion at 98 Joseph Street in Port Carling lists its hours as Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 10 p.m. The page was last updated August 7, 2026. Those are summer-dated hours, so call before a Tuesday drive in November, the same as you would for Sherwood.
Over on the Lake Rosseau shore at Minett, JW Marriott The Rosseau runs several dining rooms. Their hours are shifting too. The Muskoka Chophouse serves dinner daily from May to October, then moves to seasonal hours from October to April. The resort's dining page doesn't list the reduced schedule. The same page lists Lakes, its casual spot, daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Teca daily from 5 to 10 p.m., and Cottages Restaurant daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Country Market café is marked as seasonal.
So a late-fall week on Lake Joe looks like this. Port Carling and Minett cover the weeknights, with a call ahead. Sherwood covers Friday lunch through Sunday breakfast, and Thursday dinner on most weeks. Three weekends get extra programming: the Culinary Weekend on November 13 to 15, the Port Carling parade on November 28, and the Murder Mystery on December 5. The Friday rate runs from October 23 until May 1, 2027, about when Vintages goes back to serving every day.
For families who keep a Lake Joseph cottage open well into November, knowing which weekends the shore is busy is part of how the place gets used. If your family is thinking about the cottage's next chapter, The Blair Group can talk it through over the same quiet weekends. We offer confidential valuations and exclusive listing previews, so you can see where your shoreline stands before spring.
